"Most Fabulous School Culture"

You might be hearing or seeing things around the Preschool that are related to our Behavior Strategies Program.  We thought that you might be interested in becoming familiar with some of the basics of this program.

P.B.I.S. is a process that organizes adults and students to create a social culture in the school that will encourage positive behavior and interactions, while discouraging problematic behaviors.  Hopefully, this will lead to a safe environment where students achieve academically and build positive relationships with each other and with adults.  The process focuses on expectations, rather than rules.

This past August, the preschool staff was presented with “Most Fabulous School Culture” perpetual trophy award. There were be three trophies awarded every year (Primary, Elementary & Secondary) to the schools meet the following criteria:

 1) 80/80 SET score within current school year

2)  At least one TIC (Team Implementation Checklist) completed within current school year (this can be used as an action-plan).

3)  At least one Self-Assessment survey completed within the last two school years.

4)  At least one School Safety survey completed within the last two school years.

5)  Submission of a Universal story and a Secondary story within the same school year

6) Submission of end-of-year School Profile.

We are very proud of our staff and students with their hard work and dedication to this approach we have created a positive school environment.  The preschool PBIS team will be sending representatives to a PBIS forum in which other preschool programs will be attending and sharing PBIS ideas.

What is P.B.I.S. ?
There are currently 46 states in our country and 7000 schools that participate in school initiatives that promote positive pro-social behavior through the national PBIS system..  Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a proactive systems approach for creating and maintaining safe and effective learning environments in schools, and ensuring that all students have the social/emotional skills needed to ensure their success at school and beyond.

Prairie Children Preschool has been very active in promoting “positive” behavior in preschool children through the P.B.I.S. system over the past five years.  Prairie Children Preschool was one of the 2007 DuPage County Regional recipients of promoting a wonderful school climate.  School administrators, teachers and parents have worked collaboratively to build the foundational skills preschoolers need in order to be successful in building a positive school experience
(P.B.I.S. state conference notes 2008).
____

Why P.B.I.S. ?
This thoughtful approach will assist children in developing a sense of security and safety in the school environment as well as respect for self and others. Through positive interactions in a caring atmosphere, these techniques/strategies will be utilized as follows: state rules and guidelines, set limits, maintain consistency and model appropriate behavior.

How do Parents Support P.B.I.S?
Parents are encouraged to use the common vocabulary of Be Ready, Respectful, and Safe when talking with your child at home. Model for your child by using language that lets your child know that you accept them and celebrate their accomplishments.
